Wayanad sightseeing




Kuruva island or Kuruvadweep

One of the most beautiful spots in the Wayanad region, Kuruvadweep or Kuruva island is a major tourist hotspot. Spread over 950 acres, the island consists of dense forests, teeming with wildlife. The one thing that is really striking about this place is the complete silence broken only by faint jungle sounds. A world away from the buzzing city, Kuruvadweep is truly a nature's gift to all the visitors in this place.
There are actually three islands with a few submerged satellite islets. The main island has two freshwater lakes, attracting several species of birds. This island is accessible via boats and rafts provided by Kerala tourism. The island is mostly managed and maintained by the locals living in and around the place.

Things to do :

 One of the most exciting things about Kuruva Island for tourists is their famous boat rides on bamboo rafts. Trekkers also visit Kuruva Island to explore the pristine environment and witness the most exotic species of plants, animals and birds here.  
The enthralling beauty of this island attracts many people who wish to escape the hustle and bustle of their lives and surround themselves in the serenity of nature.

Nearest railway station: Kozhikode, about 99 km away from Mananthavady
Nearest airport: Calicut International Airport, about 119 km

Travel Tips
There are no shops in the islands. If you have kids with you, carry some snacks and water with you. Avoid throwing trash and plastic anywhere in the river and islands. Carry your camera since this place is so beautiful and is a paradise for the photographers.

During rainy days, the walking trails can get really muddy. Remember to carry an umbrella since there are limited number of shelters once you enter the island. Other than the small open huts and benches along the walking trails, there are limited amenities in the islands.

Kuruva island is home for several wild animals including elephants. They usually don't come to the tourist zones. You are advised to stay within the tourist zone and avoid entering the forest area where wild animals may be found.

The river surrounding the islands have strong currents and whirlpools in certain areas. follow forest departments’s warning signs and fences to avoid accidents.

Swimming is allowed in the tourist zone. Remember to carry your bath towels or swimwear.

Timings & Season
June to November-closed.

Exact dates of closure are usually announced according to the water level in the river. During monsoon, the water level in the river will raise very high and most part of the Kuruva island will go under water. 

December to May-open from 9:30 am to 3:30 pm. Even after closing the ticket counters, visitors can stay in the island till sunset.

Edakkal caves

Twenty five kilometers away from Kalpetta lays two caves which showcases nature’s skill and philosophy on architecture. These caves are located 1,200 m above the sea level on Ambukutty Mala. The name ‘Edakkal’ literally means ‘a stone in between’. Here you can see a cave formed by a heavy boulder straddling a fissure in the rock.

Things to do :

The steep climb from the minor caves to the major caves itself is an expedition quite challenging.You can plan a picnic a little away after taking permission from the authorities.With prior permission you can spend a day or two with tribal settlements in the area.
Visit soochippara waterfalls which is a small pond that forms at the end of the cave .The water has the effect to calm down your nerves as it is so cool and refreshing

Travel Tips
Edakkal caves is strictly plastic free zone.Make sure you corporate with it.
Visitors are not supposed to touch the painting as it is a historic landmark
Donot carry snack packs into the cave.fine will be levied.
